Internet Security Info

The following information is a good guideline to follow in order to keep your computer secure, able to boot and avoid repairs.

Preventing email worms:

Antivirus software is not enough. An email worm can spread worldwide in just seconds, but hours for antivirus companies to analyze, create, and send signature updates to repair infected computers. Fortunately, there are five easy steps you can take to ameliorate, stop or repair these PC vulnerabilities that may prevent computer boot up.

Step 1: Identification; Understanding the attachment is the first step towards email security. All executable type attachments have the potential to be infected. This covers a wide range of extensions and by default, Windows suppresses file extensions. Enable file extension viewing on your PC.

Step 2: Intentions; an executable type attachment should not be opened unless it was specifically requested or expected by the computer user. Email worms are sent to addresses found on infected users' computers, just knowing the sender is no proof of intent- they may well be infected. In fact, odds are an email worm will arrive from someone you know and the sender is oblivious to the email virus being sent from their computer.

Worse, today's worms trick the "from" address, so it may well be that it's not even from the person or computer you think it is. Some of these nasty emails may even contain boot sector viruses which are the more difficult to repair. If there's any question as to the intent, see Rule 3 below.

Step 3: Necessity; this is the simplest rule to follow, if you don't need the attachment, don't open it. Delete it or wipe it from your computer or your computer may not start on the next boot.

Step 4: Secure email clients; many email worms and viruses have taken advantage of security vulnerabilities found in Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express. However, any mail client that supports HTML and scripting should be considered at risk.

Patch Windows; Microsoft provides a Windows update site to download security patch files to your computer. The site will automatically scan your computer system and provide a list of recommended updates specific to your operating system. Install any updates to your computer marked as "Critical". Remember computer security is never passive; it is an ongoing process as new vulnerabilities are constantly discovered. Visit the Windows update site monthly to ensure all necessary patches are installed on your PC. These patches can be effective in avoiding computers repairs in security instances.

General PC Security Measures:

Firewalls; Always use a firewall when connected to the internet. This is crucial in fighting off malicious hackers and malware.

If in trouble with a computer virus go to the virus scan page for help and repair tools! Do not turn off the computer before removing a virus as it may not boot easily on the next start; also see the PC Tips page for security tips.
