Queue- to take a "place" and wait in turn. The user may then be prompted once again when it is their turn or the queue may automatically start.

Quotas- a limited amount of defined actions.

QWERTY Keyboard- an original, standard keyboard designed from the layout of manual typewriters; the first upper left-hand side of the letter keys on the keyboard is Q, W, E, R, T, Y from left to right, ordered.

RAM; Rapid Access Memory- volatile storage that holds the current information being used such as the operating system, programs and other commands that are utilized by the CPU; when the unit is powered down all the information is no longer available since it is information temporarily stored electrically.

RAM Disk- or RAM Drive are a portion of the RAM that is dedicated as if an individual drive.

Raster Graphics- a graphic image or bitmap usually represented in a pixelated rectangular viewing area.

Raster Scan- used in computer bitmap systems and displays images one line at a time to complete an image; also the way television transmits images.

ROM; Read-Only Memory- data/instructions that are stored on a variety of devices within chips making it difficult or impossible to alter.

Read/Write Head- the physical mechanism, a small electronic coil and metal pole, that reads and writes data.

Real Mode- an execution mode that is supported by the Intel 80286 processor and those manufactured later.

Reboot- to restart a computer through the "Start" button and then "Restart" which shuts the operating system down and reloads the system upon booting.

RAID; Redundant Array of Independent Disks- originally called Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks; a multi-disk system for data storage that can be assigned across drives in different ways known as "RAID Levels".

Refresh- resending or updating the image or webpage.

Registry- an hierarchical database of Window's entries that pertain to configuration of hardware, software, current user info, etc. on Windows OS's; the registry is listed as a large tree.

Registry Keys- the individual configuration settings within the larger database of the registry tree.

RegEdit- the command that allows one to see the hierarchical database with the configurations of software, hardware and users.

RESET- to reboot the system back to the previous, original configuration; actions generally performed when the system is frozen or other catastrophic issues.

Resolution- the number of pixels that can be displayed within a determined space.

ROM BIOS- the instructions (ROM) written or "embedded" within the onboard chips that have limited, programmable features offered to the user such as "Boot Order", listings of hardware devices, the ability to limit or change characteristics of instructions to the hardware, peripherals, etc.

Root Directory- the top directory in a file system; the main directory containing the entire tree structure of the system and information.

RS-232C- a single-ended communication or data control used by serial ports with serial binary data transfer used by Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) or Data Circuit-terminating Equipment (DCE); common with serial port communications.

RS-422- a serial data communication protocol now known ass EIA-422.

RS-423- a serial communication standard set by the EIA for connecting and communicating with serial interfaces.
