Magnetic Disk- a physical device that holds data in microscopic sizes via a magnetized surface.

Magnetic Tape- the older traditional back-up method that allowed for catastrophic disaster to be recovered by the taped archives sequentially.

Mapped Drives- drives that are assigned logical drive letters so that local computers may be able to access those resources across the network.

Master Boot Record (MBR)- the first sector of the drive that contains the Master Boot Partition table with disk size, information about the partitions, along with the Master Boot Code that loads the operating system from the active partition.

Master File Table (MFT)- the major component of the NTFS system replacing the older FAT system that contains information about each file on the hard disk.

MEM.EXE- a DOS command that reports the available, used and free memory.

Memory- refers to storing information; there are two methods, one method stores data in onboard chips, RAM or ROM and the second method is to store seconday dataother physical devices

Memory Management- the process of distributing memory and redistributing memory as efficiently as possible.

Memory Map- refers to how memory is arranged.

Memory-Mapped I/O- the method of utilizing inport and outport of information that comes from the CPU and sends communications to the peripherals in the computer.

Menu- a list of commands whether through a drop-down menu with a list or a hierarchical list.

Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (MOS)- a type of logic and memory chips composed of metal, oxide and semiconductive layered material.

MHz (Megahertz)- one million hertz per second; one million cycles per second.

Microcomputer- denotes personal computers and other devices with microprocessors.

Microsoft Management Console (MMC)- a component of Windows 2000 and later OSs that offers an interface and snap-ins to assist administrative duties in configuring and monitoring the system.

Mirroring- copying data to two independent disks with a RAID fault-tolerance.

Modem (modulater-demodulator)- a device that allows communication between the host computer and other computers through a telephone system; the device converts analog to digital.

Monitor- computer display that is usually flat-screens versus the older CRTs.

Mouse- the peripheral device used to execute icons on the desktop, used for scrolling the screen up or down, playing computer games, helpful in desktop publishing, etc.

MSD (Microsoft Diganostics)- a Microsoft tool used for diagnostics in the 1990s.

MSDOS.SYS- an important file that was a part of MS-DOS and Windows 9x systems. It contains the core operating system code, the kernel, in MS-DOS.

Multimedia- different forms of media such as digital pictures, audio, video and presented sometimes in different file extensions versus the traditional methods of media such as printed media.

Multimedia Extensions Technology (MMX)- an outdated technology used in Pentium processors by Intel to speed up graphics and enhance sound.

Multi-Tasking- the ability of a computer to run programs simultaneously.
