Joystick- a peripheral that swivels 360 degrees and may have buttons for extra functions.

Jumper- a shorting bridge to change a configuration on a physical device such as changing the jumper setting on a hard drive to configure it as a slave; also a 2-4 pin BERG connector that allows for the attachment of a switch or shorting bridge.

Kernel Mode-

Keyboard- the most common peripheral that is of the standard typewriter layout with additional keys for multiple functions.

Laptop Keyboard- a specific keyboard designed for each individual laptop; hundreds of different models are used to match each individual laptop.

Laser Printer- an electrophotographic method where images are transferred electrostatically to paper.

Legacy Devices- devices and adaptor cards that are not plug-n-play.

Letter Quality- refers to the quality of lettering compared to an electric typewriter.

Light-Emitting Diode (LED)- diodes that emitt light and are used to indicate active circuits.

Liquid-Crystal Display (LCD)- liquid-crystal material is place betwee two sheets of glass with either rows or columns of electrodes on each piece of glass that when electrically charged will not allow light through the display panel.

Local Area Network (LAN)- a local small or large grouping of devices that share a common network.

Logical Block Addressing (LBA)- an organizational strategy on hard disks that allows the operating to access larger drives than older BIOS/FAT management systems could handle.

Logon- the process of entering an identification name and password.

Loopback- the ability to test a device or system by sending a signal and having the signal returned to compare with the original data sent.

Lost Allocation Units- lost clusters that are file segment to associated to other files in the file allocation table (FAT).

LPT1- the name used for parallel port #1 generally reserved for the printer.
