Disk- A term that has several references to devices like, floppies, CDs, DVDs and the platter in the hard drive.
Disk Arrays- A set of disk drives that help improve performance and fault tolerance by the particular way the data is written to the disks and by way of detection and corrective actions for damaged files.
Disk Drive- A peripheral device that holds removable disks or has permanent spinning magnetic or optical disks. Replaced rather than repaired in the computer repair field.
Disk Operating System (DOS)- Generally refers to the Microsoft family of operating systems and is referred to PC-DOS for IBM or MS-DOS for compatibles.
Docking Station- Special platforms where a portable computer is inserted into it in order to provide more I/O expansion slots. Devices such as disk drives, keyboards, monitors and other peripherals can be added, however, there is no standard for docking stations and they must be specific to the type of portable computer.

Domain- A group of members that have a common directory database and are organized in levels with each domain identified by a unique name and adniminsteres as a single unit with common rules and procedures.
Domain Name- A unique name identifying a host computer on the internet.
Domain Name Service (DNS)- A database structure that assigns domain names and their IP addresses for systems on levels under them. The IP addresses of all computers attached to the internet are tracked by the listing system and are organized on various levels.
Dot-matrix Printer- A printer that forms its characters from one or more columns of dot hammers; greater numbers of hammers are required for higher resolution.
Dot Pitch- A resolution measurement of the dot matrix; the higher the number of dot matrix per linear inch, the higher the resolution.
Drive- (1) An electromechanical device that spins disks, discs or tapes at high speeds enabling recording and/or reading. (2) In a DOS, the drive can be the equivalent of a file drawer that holds files and folders. (3) The signal output of a device that activates the input of another device. These devices are often replaced rather than repaired in the computer repair field.
Dual Booting- Hard drives that have two or more operating systems can be configured to boot from a particular system or given a choice during the preboot.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)- A protocol where IP addresses are dynamically assigned to a server's clients. The software is available on Windows and it must be located on the server and client which allows ISP providers to dynamically assign IP addresses to their customers.
Dynamic Link Library (DLL) Files- A Windows library file that has executable code shared between Windows programs eliminating redundant programming.
Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM)- A type of RAM that must be refreshed every two milleseconds or it will lose its data.
