FDISK COMMAND- A disk utility program that partitions the hard disk into several independent disks. Field Replacable Unit (FRU)- A device that may be replaced in the computer repair field rather than repaired in order to save time and money.

File- Any document, record, table or program that is stored under its own name.

File Allocation Table (FAT)- The table on the disk that is DOS formatted and tracks where each file is located.

File Menu- A drop down menu in Windows when a file is right-clicked that gives users an option to open, move, copy and delete files, folders or applications.

File Systems- A file management system that tracks and organizes files and is a hierarchical directory system that utilizes directories to organize files in tree-like structures.

File Transfer Protocol- A program that transfers files from one FTP host site to another.

Filenames- A unique name for files on a disk system in order to recognize and organize them.

FireWire- An I/O bust standard that transfers data at a rate of 400 Mbps to support high bandwidth for real-time audio and visual equipment. Also known as IEEE-1394 it supports up to 63 external computer devices.

Firmware- ROM IC circuitry that is used to permanently store computer programs.

Floppy Disk- A square envelope or cartridge that holds data as a removable secondary medium, can be erased hundreds of times and fits into a floppy drive on computers.

Flow Control- A software or hardware method of controlling data. The software control method tells the sending computer to stop or start the data with special codes such as XON/XOFF.

Folders- Icons representing directories and subdirectories in Windows.

Folder Options- Options that allow the user to open a folder with a single or double click, to turn on the Active Desktop, to change appearance of the contents of Windows Explorer, change the appearance of the folder content, change to cascading windows, change the application used to opent certain type of files or to make files available when not on-line with the network.

Font- A single set of alphanumeric characters that has similar characteristics like typeface, style, point size, orientation, stroke weight, spacing and pitch.

Forests- A group of one or more Active Directory domain tress that do not share contiguous namespace, trust each other and where all domains share common configuration, schema and global catalog.

Form Feed- The movement of the paper by pressing the Form Feed (FF) on the printer or sending the ASCII form-feed character.

FORMAT Command- A utility of Microsoft DOS that prepares a disk by placing track and sector information on the disk and marking the bad tracks and sector so no data is written on them.

Formatting- An operation of preparing a floppy or hard drive that places operation data tracking table that are system-specific to the media and tests the storage are to determine that it is reliable for holding information.

Fragmentation- A condition where contiguous files are scaterred around a disk because of file deletion or file moving. This causes slower computer performance due to the computer drive's read/write head moving across the disk to find pieces of single files.

Frame- (1) One PC graphics data screen or the amount of memory to store it, (2) the construction of a complete package of data with all the headers for transferring it to an Ethernet frame or (3) a memory wintow where applications and operating systems exhange data.

Full-duplex- A data communication method where data flows in both directions simultaneously.

Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN)- A name that includes the host name, second-level domain name and the top-level domain name. For example www.pcvirusdoctors.com has www as the host name, pcvirusdoctors as the second-level domain name and .com as the top-level domain name.

Functions Keys- Keyboard keys that have special functions, frequently used in combinations with other keys and have different functions with different programs.
