Cold Boot- A cold boot is when the computer is started by turning the power on. A common term in the computer repair field.
Complimentary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS)- A MOS technology used to make IC devices, however slower than other IC technologies but has higher circuit-packing density than other technologies. These ICs are are voltage spike and static discharge sensitive and must be protected from static shock. PC repair technicians in the field must wear static discharge arm-bands to avoid damaging CMOS ICs.
Color Monitor- Known as RGB monitors and allow users to run text or graphic applications. The two basic types are digital (TTL) and analog with analog RGB monitors allowing many more colors than digital RGB monitors. These can often be cheaper to replace than repair in the computer repair field.
Color Printer- A printer with the capability of printing in color using inkjet, laser-printing technology, thernal-transfer, dot-matrix or electrophotographics.
COM1- This names the serial port #1 used in Microsoft's DOS version.

COMMAND.COM- The DOS command that interprets commands through the keyboard or other input devices and carries the commands out according to the definition and the definitions may be altered by adding switches to the command. COMMAND.COM is loaded at the end of the boot process. A common use in the PC repair field.
Command Prompt- A screen symbol that shows the user it is ready for a command; it generally consists of a drive letter followed by a colon and a blinking cursor. Commonly used in the computer repair field.
Compatible- A reference to computer equipment that works like or looks like a known standard device or model. A PC-compatible model, also known as a clone, is a PC that differs physically from an IBM-PC but runs software designed for the IBM-PC and is able to accept hardware designed for IBM-PCs; often referred to in the PC repair field.

Computer Management Console- A Window's management console that allows users to track and configure all system hardware and software elements and can it can be used to configure network options and to view system events; often referred to in the PC repair field.
Computer Names- A name created for computers by network administrators to identify the computer to other computers on the network. A general recommendation is for the names to be 15 characters or less, however, if the computer has TCP/IP networking protocol installed the name can range up to 63 characters but should contain only letters, upper or lowercase, numbers and hyphens.
CONFIG.SYS- A Microsoft operating system configuration file that customizes the system's hardware environment during startup and the peripheral device drivers with the .SYS file extensions are initialized during startup.
Configuration- A customized computer system comprised of a particular number and type of interrelated components. A communication network configuration varies within different systems and it requires that a means be established to inform the system software what options are installed; often referred to in the computer repair field.
Configuration Manager- A Windows Plug-n-Play component to coordinate the configuration for all the devices in the system.
Continuous Forms- Paper sheets joined together with perforations fitting into motorized sprockets on printers through holes on both edges of the paper advancing the paper through the printing process.
Control Bus- A microprocessor pathway to various memory, prgrammable and I/O system elements that are not necessarily related and can be unidirectional or bidirectional.
Control Character- A special character type transmitted through a line feed, a carriage return or escape that causes some event on a printer display or communication path.

Control Panels- The Window's component that customizes the operation and apperance of Windows function and can be accessed through the Start button/Settings path or under the My Computer icon on the desktop; often referred to in the computer repair field.
Control Protocols- The protocols that manage the communication interface to the networking protocols used by the system; each network transport has a corresponding control protocol.
Cursor- The symbol on the screen that is movable and indicates where the action is taking place. A text cursor can be a blinking underline, vertical line, or a rectangle.
Cursor Keys- Keyboard keys that can move the cursor up and down or left to right and are the four keys with the arrows pointing in each direction.
Cyclic Redundency Check (CRC)- This is the error-checking technique that employs division to determine the remainder of data through a communication channel. If the receiver and transmitter do not agree on the remainder of data then an error is detected.
Cylinder- Normally on multiple-platter disk drives, it is the combination of all tracks that reside on the same track number location on each disk surface.
