Backup- An operation usually performed to backup critical file in case a drove crashes or the disk becomes corrupt. Backup utilites can quickly create duplicate files, folders or an entire disk.
Backup Domain Controller (BDC)- BDC's are servers within a network that are used to store read-only backup copies of the directory database.These servers authenticate user logons and a network can have more than one backup domain controller.
Backup Wizard- A step-by-step proceduree of configuring and scheduling and automatic backup.
Batch File (BAT file)- A batch file is a file name extension created with a word processor and contains a list of DOS commands that execute as if typed individually.
Baud Rate- It is the number of electrical-state changes per second on a communications data line where lower speeds coincide with baud rate and bits-per-second rate and at higher speeds the baud rate is a fraction of the bits-per second rate.
Binary- Meaning two and used in digital computers where data is processed after being converted into binary numbers, 0 and 1.
Basic Input Output System (BIOS)- See ROM BIOS. The BIOS may be changed to boot to strictly the CD drive in order to boot and repair PC's. This is commonly accessed during computer repairs in order to change the boot sequence.
Bit (binary digit)- Either a 0 or a 1 in a single binary number. A series of bits are manipulated by computers in varied units known as nibbles, bytes, words or characters.
Bitmap- Used in computer graphics to describe a video image in a memory area; one bit represents one pixel on a monochrome screen and several bits can represent one pixel on color or graysclale monitors.

Blue Screen- Also known as Blue Screen of Death, it is a kernel-mode stop indicating failure of a core operating system function producing a blue screen rather than risking catastrophic memory and/or file corruption. This is a common occurence in the computer repair field.
Boot- This is where the computer gets its first instruction on the bootable portion of the hard disk drive; a common term in the computer repair field.
Boot Menu- The menu is displayed when the F8 function key is pressed when starting Windows. The menu is generated by the BOOT.INI boot loader menu file and options in the window offer to select various operating systems on the computer; if no selection is made after a given time the computer will boot to the default system; a common term in the computer repair field.
Boot Partition- Also known as the active partition, it is the disk partition that holds the system files necessary to load the operating system into memory; a common term in the computer repair field.

Boot Sector- This is the first sector on the disk or partition that holds the code, referred to as boot record, that make the system move the operating system files into memory to start execution; a common term in the computer repair field.
Bootable Disk- A disk that starts the operating system. These were commonly floppy disks and now are more commonly contained on CD's or even DVD's.
BOOT.INI- During the bootup process, this is the hidden boot loader menu file that is used by the NTLDR to generate the Boot Loader menu displayed on the screen; a common term in the computer repair field.
BOOTSECT.DOS- This is the Windows NT file used to load operating systems other than NT.
Bootstrap Loader- A term that refers to both software routines of starting a system and loading the operating system. A common term used during pc repair problems involving the boot files.
Bits Per Second (bps)- This is a term commonly referred to in communication systems to measure the speed of data.
Bus- The bus carries data or control signals from one unit to another through a parallel series of conductors.
Bus Master- An intelligent device of any class that can take control of the computer system buses.
Byte- Byte is an 8-bit pattern of both a high and a low order nibble.
